How to Extract a Still Photo from a Live Photo

Live Photos are incredible for capturing the atmosphere of a moment, but sometimes you just want a standard, high-quality still image. Whether you want to print a photo, use it as a profile picture, or share it on a platform that doesn't support Apple's Live Photo format, extracting a still is a crucial skill.

This guide will show you how to extract a still photo natively on your iPhone, and how to use online tools for bulk conversions or cross-platform needs.

Method 1: Changing the Key Photo on iPhone

By default, the image you see in your camera roll is the exact moment you tapped the shutter button. But since a Live Photo records 1.5 seconds before and after that tap, you might find a better frame hidden in the motion clip.

Here is how to select the best frame before extracting it:

  1. Open the Photos app and select your Live Photo.
  2. Tap Edit in the top right corner.
  3. Tap the Live Photo icon (the concentric circles) at the bottom.
  4. Drag the white slider on the frame viewer to find the perfect moment.
  5. Tap Make Key Photo.
  6. Tap Done.

Your Live Photo now displays this new frame by default.

Method 2: Duplicating as a Still Photo (Natively on iOS)

Once you have your perfect Key Photo, you can easily strip away the video portion to create a standard static image.

  1. Open the Live Photo in your Photos app.
  2. Tap the Share button (the square with an upward arrow).
  3. Scroll down and tap Duplicate.
  4. Choose Duplicate as Still Photo.

You will now have two versions in your camera roll: the original Live Photo and a new, static JPEG/HEIC image. This new image takes up significantly less storage space because it doesn't include the 3-second video file.

Method 3: Using a Web-Based Extractor (Best for PC/Android)

If you have already transferred a Live Photo to your PC, Mac, or Android device, you might notice it appears as either a static HEIC file or a ZIP/LIVP file. In these cases, native iOS tools aren't available.

You can use our free, browser-based Live Photo to JPG Converter to extract the still image instantly:

  1. Go to the Live Photo to JPG tool.
  2. Drag and drop your Live Photo file (supports .livp, .heic, or combined files).
  3. The tool runs locally in your browser to extract the highest quality static frame.
  4. Download the extracted JPEG image.

Because the tool runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly, your photos are never uploaded to our servers, ensuring complete privacy.

Why Extract a Still Photo?

  • Saving Storage Space: Live Photos are roughly twice the size of standard photos because they contain an embedded MOV video file. Downgrading to a still saves massive amounts of iCloud storage.
  • Better Quality for Printing: Printers and photo services only accept static formats like JPG or PNG.
  • Social Media Compatibility: Not all platforms support Live Photos. Extracting a still ensures your photo looks exactly as intended when posted to Instagram, X (Twitter), or Facebook.

By mastering the extraction process, you get the best of both worlds: the safety net of capturing 3 seconds of video, and the ability to pull a perfectly timed, crisp photograph from that footage.
