TikTok Live Photo Comments: How to Post Moving Photos

By Carrieยท 2026-09-16ยท 5 min read

You can now post Live Photos in TikTok comments. TikTok's September 2026 announcement says you can select a Live Photo from your camera roll and share a short motion preview inside a photo comment. Start with an original Live Photo in your phone's photo library; you do not need to convert it to MP4 for this feature.

This guide covers the photo-comment workflow, checks to try when the option is missing or the image stays still, and what remains unconfirmed for Android and converted files.

Checked against official documentation on September 16, 2026. The steps below combine TikTok's documented photo-comment flow with its Live Photo announcement; they are not a device-by-device compatibility test.

What are TikTok Live Photo comments?

A Live Photo comment adds movement to an image reply beneath a TikTok post. It gives you a way to share a quick reaction, a pet's expression, or a moment from your camera roll.

TikTok's official announcement, dated September 4 in its New Zealand edition, says Live Photo Comments are available globally. Its separate photo-carousel feature lets people attach multiple images and has a different rollout schedule.

For background on the source format, see what an iPhone Live Photo is.

How to post a Live Photo in TikTok comments

First, check your source photo. On iPhone, open it in Photos and press and hold to confirm it moves. Apple explains how to find these images in its Live Photos guide. Use the original moving photo rather than a screenshot or a JPG copy.

Then follow TikTok's documented photo-comment steps:

  1. Open the TikTok post you want to reply to and open its comments.
  2. Tap the comment field, then choose Upload photo if it is available.
  3. Give TikTok access to the photo you want to use if prompted.
  4. Choose the original Live Photo from your library. Check any preview offered before posting.
  5. Use the post-comment button when you are ready to share it. Check the posted result to see whether its movement was retained.

TikTok's Help Center still qualifies photo uploads as available in select regions, while its newer announcement describes global Live Photo availability. If your interface differs, work through the checks below; the announcement alone cannot confirm what your account currently displays.

TikTok Live Photo comments not working? Start here

The most useful first check is whether the problem follows one photo or affects every photo. Try an original Live Photo taken with your iPhone camera before troubleshooting a downloaded or converted image.

What you seeWhat to check next
No photo-upload option in the comment fieldUpdate TikTok, reopen it, and check another post that accepts comments. If the option is still absent, consult TikTok support.
The picker opens, but your photo is missingReview TikTok's photo-library permission and make sure the intended image is included in its allowed selection.
The image is already static in Apple PhotosConfirm you selected the original Live Photo and that its Live effect is enabled. A still-only copy does not contain the original movement.
The original moves in Photos but the comment stays stillCompare it with a fresh camera Live Photo. This helps separate a particular file problem from TikTok's handling of your uploads.
A converted file is visible only in FilesIt has not necessarily become a Live Photo asset in your photo library. Check the import requirement before trying the comment picker again.

These are diagnostic checks, not guaranteed fixes. A converter cannot enable a missing TikTok account feature. If a fresh camera Live Photo also fails, include your phone model, operating system, TikTok version, and whether the photo moves in your gallery when reporting the issue.

Can you post Live Photo comments on Android?

TikTok's announcement does not provide a device or file-format compatibility list for Samsung Motion Photos, Google Motion Photos, or imported Apple Live Photos. Global availability does not establish support for every Android motion-photo format.

If your Android app shows a photo-comment option, try an original motion photo and check the result. Movement in your phone's gallery alone is not evidence that TikTok will preserve it.

Our iPhone Live Photos vs Google and Samsung Motion Photos guide explains the format differences. To share an Android motion photo as a regular video post, you can also use Motion Photo to Video. That is a separate posting workflow.

Can you make a comment from a video or GIF?

If you are starting with a clip, Video to Live Photo can create a Live Photo package. For an animation, use GIF to Live Photo.

There are two separate steps to check before using the result in TikTok:

  1. Import: A downloaded .livp package in Files is not automatically a selectable Live Photo in Apple Photos. You need an import workflow that preserves the paired image and video as a single Live Photo asset. See our Live Photo format guide.
  2. Compatibility: Confirm the imported result plays in Photos, then check whether TikTok accepts it with motion. We have not verified TikTok comment compatibility for files produced by these converters.

If you already have a camera Live Photo, try that first. Converting it adds an unnecessary step.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload an MP4 or GIF as a Live Photo comment?

TikTok's announcement describes selecting Live Photos from the camera roll. It does not establish that an arbitrary MP4 or GIF can be attached through the same option. For a regular video post instead, convert your Live Photo to MP4.

Will the comment keep my Live Photo's sound?

The announcement describes a motion preview but does not specify audio playback. Do not rely on sound to convey the meaning of your photo comment.

Is this the same as turning a TikTok into a live wallpaper?

They are separate tasks. This tutorial is about uploading a photo to a comment. Our TikTok to Live Photo tool starts with a saved video and creates a Live Photo package for a different workflow.

Do I need a Live Photo converter to use this feature?

No conversion is required when you already have a supported Live Photo in your camera roll. Start with the original and use TikTok's photo-comment option. A converter is relevant when your starting material is a different format, and its output still needs the import and compatibility checks above.
